Photos Compliments of Post Commander Harry Tweed and Al Wesley
When the 8 Coast Guard Recruits arrived at Post 184 in Wildwood they were told to relax and have fun for the day.
The day before we at the Post peeled some white potatoes and some sweet potatoes. This went into the first of many meals the Recruits would get that day, starting of with bagels with Cream Cheese Donuts, Orange Juice, water, and cakes from Starbucks. The Recruits had breakfast at Cape May at 05:00, but ate everything we put out fo rthem at the Post. They were all given something 150 minutes each to phone whom ever the wanted, in addition to many more minutes that the Post itself gave if they needed them. We have a shuffleboard at the Post, which they played on, and a dart board there too….also Music played for them for free from the Juke Box. Around noon time, and after a prayer was said over the meal we all got together and served them Fillet Mignon and told that after that was done, Turkey with just about everything there was including Macaroni & Cheese, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, ham and pineapples, filling, Cranberry Sauce, apple sauce, Cole slaw, rolls and butter...along with the Turkey and gravy.
Dessert consisted of a marble cake, cup cakes, cheesecake, cookies, apple pie, pumpkin pie, coffee, tea. and milk, All of which was out all day for them. Finally around 6-7:00 we put out the ( pealing ) shrimp cheese, and pepperoni, and ice cream.. The Recruits made phone calls Home, during the day. While that was going on, a mailing box was made up consisting of Two Sweat shirts from the Marine Birthday, a tee shirt, and a post hat. This would be mailed/shipped home, BY Dan and his helpers Before they left and still doing some phoning, they were taken across the street, each given money to buy what ever they wanted from a Rite-Aid Store across the street. All Eight of them seemed to be taken back by all of this, nothing like this was expected…Post 184 American legion always goes all out fo rour fellow and new Veterans. Al Wesley printed 5 X 7's to give out to each recruit that wanted them. Copies were also made for Post 184.
A fine time was had by all……. STEVE did a great job cooking all day long for all……Thank You Steve and his helpers….including Kitchen Help, fellow cooks and servers…A Beautiful Job…
These young men and women are to be congratulated for their behavior also. I think have two more weeks before graduation.
