              Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion
                                     For God and Country

We associate ourselves together for the following purposes:

to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;

to maintain law and order;

to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism;

to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the great wars;

to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation;

to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;

to make right the master of might;

to promote peace and goodwill on earth;

to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy;

to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.

The American Legion is the largest veteran's organization in the world, with a membership of more than 2.8 million wartime veterans in the United States, District of Columbia and seven foreign countries and growing

Members of The American Legion are honorably discharged men and women who served their country on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama and Persian Gulf Wars and other Conflicts.

The American Legion was founded and organized in 1919. Since that time, The American Legion has touched virtually every facet of American life, fulfilling its main objective of service to the community, state and nation.

Last year: 2006  and still more has been done with Pride for our Country!

The American Legion joined with the Children's Miracle Network to raise nearly $2 million dollars for CMN. Deserving high school students were awarded $4 million in college scholarships. Over $21 million was spent by The American Legion and its affiliated organizations for the benefit of children and youth last year. Local charity campaigns received over $10 million in donations from local American Legion Posts.  Legionnaires across the country donate more than a million hours each year in the Veteran's Administration "Voluntary Service Program," helping patients in VA Medical Facilities.

Legion members donated over 2 million hours of service to their communities. The American Legion has also, for many years, conducted programs that have been designed to benefit the youth of our nation. Some of these programs are  :High School Oratorical Contest American Legion Boys State and Boys Nation Eagle Scout Scholarships Scholarship Information Booklets Junior Shooting Sports Program American Legion Child Welfare Foundation Temporary Financial Assistance National Emergency Fund
